Robert M. Farley has died in an explosion that destroyed the NFL pro’s entire home in North Carolina, 45 kilometres north of Charlotte.

The accident occurred on the night from Monday to Tuesday. Farley sr was found dead in the rubble of the property in Lake Norman the following morning.

The Titans pro was not at home at the time of the explosion. According to his teammates, Farley had been one of the last players to leave the locker room on Monday night.

According to the AP news agency, Titans coach Mike Vrabel called the situation “shocking”. He said the team was doing everything it could to support Farley.

The player himself had travelled to his home state on Tuesday morning.

Another person escapes with injuries

According to local authorities, another person was injured in the blast. The man, Christian Rodgers, is a family friend. He was taken to hospital with a concussion.

The authorities further stated that the exact location of the explosion was in a bedroom of the house, which was valued at nearly two million dollars. Adjacent buildings remained unharmed, according to the report.

Gas causes explosion

The explosion was caused by escaping gas, which ignited.

Photos of the accident site show huge debris spread over a large area.

Wooden parts and window frames were thrown up to 45 metres by the explosion.
