Before the 2022 season, Russell Wilson moved from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos for several high draft picks. What followed was a disaster season for the quarterback, who didn’t show anything close to what he was known for from Seahawks days in his first year in Denver.
As it stands, the move to Colorado was a mistake. Everything could have gone very differently, because apparently Wilson almost ended up not with the Broncos, but another franchise.
Wilson only wanted to go to the Broncos
As NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports, there was also a possibility Wilson was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles or Washington Commanders. “During the 2022 NFL Combine, there were rumors that either the Eagles or the Commanders were trading for Wilson,” Rapoport said in an interview with Joey Mulinaro.
According to the report, however, Wilson had ruled out the two teams – the then-star quarterback wanted to go exclusively to the Broncos, according to the report.
Eagles and Commanders in luck?
It’s not clear whether Wilson would have performed as poorly (27th in quarterback rating/”ESPN”) with another team. But the Eagles and Commanders certainly shouldn’t have been unhappy after Wilson’s bungled season. Especially since the two franchises also would have had to give up decent draft capital or top personnel for the ex-Hawk.
The Eagles, for example, certainly wouldn’t have been able to trade for star receiver A.J. Brown if they had brought Wilson to Philadelphia.
