Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had good and bad experiences with the previous overtime rule. Now he’s speaking out about the rule change.
Munich/Kansas City – Patrick Mahomes is among the players who had bad experiences with the old overtime rule early in their careers.
In the 2018 NFL season, he lost to the New England Patriots with the Kansas City Chiefs without even having possession of the ball in overtime.
Last season, however, he experienced the opposite. In the playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City benefited because they immediately used their first possession to score a touchdown and thus won the game.
Both scenarios would no longer be possible from the 2022 season. Thanks to a rule change, each team will have one possession.
“Win the game, whichever way “
Mahomes’ reaction to this is mixed. “I’m sure there will be moments when you feel it’s a good decision,” he says of the new overtime rule.
“But then there will be moments when you score that touchdown first and feel like it’s a bad change. So you just go out and play and try to win the game any way you can. “
