Shedeur Sanders is the most polarizing rookie name of the offseason. After his dramatic drop in the draft, the young quarterback is expected to take a back seat for now – perfect for him! A commentary!
First the deep fall in the NFL draft! Then the deep fall in the depth chart! And all that just to avoid a deep fall in his NFL career?
Shedeur Sanders isn’t the Browns’ first choice at quarterback! He wasn’t even in this year’s draft!
The franchise already selected a quarterback in the third round with Dillon Gabriel – two rounds and 50 picks before Sanders!
It is also Gabriel who is currently getting more training time with the starters than Sanders. Just like Kenny Pickett. And with supposed starter Joe Flacco and the injured Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ quarterback room is overcrowded anyway.
Perfect for Shedeur Sanders!
NFL: Shedeur Sanders can learn
The pressure is off – thanks to the horror evening – or rather horror evenings – at the draft. The young quarterback can finally focus on what really matters.
To find his way to becoming a future NFL starter through hard training sessions. To show humility. To learn. From players who have more experience. Who know the business. Who can bring the “loudmouth” Sanders back down to earth.
Now it’s up to Sanders to embrace this role. This is not a demotion, quite the contrary. It should be the normal path for young quarterbacks for years to come – and as was often the case in the past.
Far too often in recent times, however, rookie quarterbacks have been thrown into the starting lineup too early. Quarterbacks who weren’t ready, who needed more time. Like Zach Wilson, Will Levis, Bryce Young …
Let young talent learn, build them up carefully, and train them to become strong starters. The patient path to success.
Mahomes, Rodgers, and Co.: Legendary quarterbacks sat on the bench for years
Just like Aaron Rodgers. Or Tom Brady. Or Patrick Mahomes. Or Drew Brees. Or Philip Rivers. Or Kirk Cousins. Or Tony Romo.
None of them started in their first year. They all had years to be introduced to the game. To get to know the business. To learn how to win. To train with the best!
It didn’t hurt any of them. They all went on to have legendary NFL careers.
That’s the path Sanders must now take – otherwise, he risks another deep fall. A fall from a franchise roster!
