The Kansas City Chiefs lose a dramatic game against the Buffalo Bills. Also because a touchdown is taken back shortly before the end because of a flag. Now the referee speaks out
Patrick Mahomes has rarely been seen this upset. After the narrow 17-20 loss to the Bills, his teammates could barely contain him on the sidelines.
In conversation with Josh Allen, he continued to berate the referees and the 28-year-old was still unable to calm down at the post-game press conference. What had happened?
An offside by Chiefs receiver Kadarius Toney, who was over the line of scrimmage, caused a spectacular Chiefs touchdown to be called back shortly before the end of the game
Kadarius Toney was so badly offsides that the refs couldn’t see the football, and he was so badly offsides that they didn’t warn Andy Reid, Ref Carl Cheffers told @mattderrick
As mad and as frustrated as Mahomes is, Toney was blatantly offsides, so they threw a flag.

For Mahomes, it’s unacceptable to penalize an offensive offside at all. “I’ve never had an offensive offside. When it happens, you get a warning. There was no warning the whole game. And then they make a decision like that in the last minute? That’s not what we want for the NFL. That’s not what we want for football. “
Now the referee involved, Carl Cheffers, also commented on the scene: “It’s one of those things where we don’t want to get too technical, but if he’s in his position over the ball, that’s something we’re going to call offensive offside,” Cheffers said in an interview with Matt Derrick after the game.
Chiefs coach Reid miffed
After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also showed his incomprehension towards the referees and complained that they did not point out to Toney that he was in the forbidden zone.
For Cheffers, it was a clear matter: “If the players want advice on their alignment, we will of course give it to them. But ultimately they are responsible for where they line up.”
Toney, who was in fact clearly offside, made no attempt to check with the referees before the move that his positioning was correct.
One reason why Cheffers did not point out his offense to the wide receiver in advance. “A caution is certainly not necessary, especially when players are so far offside that they block our view of the ball,” explained the 63-year-old.
He continued: “We would caution them if they were in the vicinity, but in this case a caution is not necessary!”
Walt Anderson, NFL Senior Vice President of Officiating, also does not want to comment on Andy Reid’s statements. He told Matt Derrick after the game: “We’re not going to comment on that. You already asked Carl Cheffers about the warnings to players. And I think Carl Cheffers answered that appropriately. “
