NFL playoffs 2025: Kansas City Chiefs beat Buffalo Bills – Mahomes runs for two touchdowns

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the Super Bowl for the third year in a row and are keeping the dream of a three-peat alive. The AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills was decided late on.

The Kansas City Chiefs are in with a chance of winning their third Super Bowl in a row.

Head Coach Andy Reid’s team defeated the Buffalo Bills 32-29 (21-10) in the NFL’s AFC Championship Game.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 18 of his 26 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown and ran for 44 yards and two touchdowns.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen completed 22 of his 34 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in his third playoff loss to Mahomes.

Chiefs and Bills trade blows

The reigning champion got down to business on the very first drive: Mahomes led the Chiefs 90 yards down the field, with running back Kareem Hunt scoring from twelve yards out to make it 7-0.

Then it was the Bills’ turn. First, kicker Tyler Bass cut the deficit to 3:7 from 53 yards out, then Buffalo forced the first Chiefs turnover after 501 plays. Running back James Cook, who scored from six yards out, was the beneficiary to give the Bills a 7:10 lead.

Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy turned the game around for the hosts again with a Mahomes pass four minutes before half-time – 14:10.

After a controversial referee decision in favor of the Chiefs on a Worthy catch, Mahomes struck again: the quarterback ran the ball into the end zone from one yard out.

But Allen had the last say before half-time: the Bills playmaker found receiver Mack Hollins from 34 yards out with 24 seconds left on the clock. Since the two-point conversion failed, the teams went into the locker rooms with a 21-16 lead.

Mahomes runs for two touchdowns

Buffalo took the lead on their first drive of the third quarter. Cook capped a run-heavy drive with a plunge into the end zone. But again, the two-point conversion failed – 21-22.

On the other side, Kansas City was facing more and more problems from the Bills defense, and the Chiefs offense failed to score in the third quarter.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Mahomes struck back. After a turnover by the Bills after a failed fourth down attempt, the Chiefs playmaker ran for his second touchdown and found Justin Watson on the two-point conversion – 29:22.

The Bills responded promptly: Allen completed a pass to Curtis Samuel on another fourth down near the end zone, Bass kept his nerve on the extra point – with six minutes left on the clock, the game was tied (29:29).

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker soon added a field goal from close range to make it 32-29. Those would prove to be the last points of the game. Kansas City’s defense held on the Bills’ final drive, and Mahomes and Co. were able to run down the clock.

In the Super Bowl on February 9, the Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles, who left the Washington Commanders no chance in the NFC Championship Game (55-23). It is the rematch of the final two years ago.
