T.J. Watt’s contract with the Steelers has one year left. The franchise will likely have to dig deep into their pockets for an extension.
T.J. Watt has been playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2017 – and that is likely to remain the case.
Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly believes that T.J. Watt has already received a lucrative contract offer from the NFL franchise.
“I believe there is already a contract offer on the table, which is quite significant,” he explained on the “Kaboly+Mack” podcast.
Watt is currently preparing for the final season of his ongoing four-year contract, which will earn him a total of $112 million.
Watt soon to be in Garrett’s sphere?
However, the Steelers star is likely to earn even more in the future. When asked by Chris Mack whether the alleged offer to Watt was in Garrett’s sphere, Kaboly did not have a clear answer, only a suspicion.
“Yes, I’m not 100 percent sure… I’m just assuming that because he won’t sign anything unless it’s the right terms, whether it’s years, guaranteed money or whatever,” he said, explaining his thinking.
Myles Garrett has redefined the market for defensive players with his $160 million contract with the Cleveland Browns. Naturally, other players are now measuring themselves against this new benchmark.
No “hometown discount” for Pittsburgh
Back in March, brother J.J. Watt made it clear on the “Pat McAfee Show” that the Steelers would not be granted a “hometown discount.” Another indication that the extension will be very expensive for Pittsburgh.
T.J. Watt led the NFL in sacks in 2020 and 2021 and did the same after his knee injury in 2023. In 2024, however, the 30-year-old was unable to quite match his previous performances, which earned him the Defense Player of the Year award several times.
