NFL – New England Patriots: Mike Vrabel announces decision on future of Drake Maye’s protector

Left tackle Will Campbell did not look good on several occasions during the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl defeat. Now head coach Mike Vrabel has announced what will happen next with the offensive lineman.

The New England Patriots’ defeat in Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks (13:29) had many faces, but analysts focused particularly on Will Campbell. The left tackle failed to protect his quarterback Drake Maye from the tremendous pressure of the Seahawks’ front.

According to the NFL’s “Next Gen Stats,” the 22-year-old allowed 14 pressures on Maye in this one game alone – the highest number in the league last season. It was the negative highlight of a weak season for the rookie, who was picked fourth overall by the Patriots in the 2025 draft.

Even before the draft, there were questions about whether Campbell could actually make it as a tackle in the NFL or whether he would be better suited as a guard in the center of the offensive line. His recent performances, especially in the Super Bowl, reignited the discussion. So what does the future hold for him? Head coach Mike Vrabel has now demonstratively stood up for his protégé and emphasized that the Patriots are continuing to plan with Campbell as left tackle. “Will is 22 years old, he’s our left tackle. He’s going to get better and stronger,” Vrabel said Tuesday at his season-ending press conference.

Injury affected Campbell

“There were moments when he played well, moments when he blocked the opponent, and there are plays he would like to have back,” Vrabel summarized. He made it clear: “We are not going to move Will to guard, center, tight end or any other position.”

In fact, Campbell had some good games at the start of the season, but a knee injury set him back. He was sidelined with injury from late November to early January and only made his comeback in the last week of the regular season. From then on, however, he no longer looked as stable as before.
Campbell himself has now confirmed that the injury continued to affect him after his return. “Of course, it wasn’t 100 percent okay. When you tear a ligament in your knee, it’s not the same as before, but I was healthy enough to play,” he clarified.
