NFL: New England Patriots – Bill Belichick felt “deceived and betrayed”

Since Bill Belichick stepped down as head coach of the New England Patriots, things have not been going well for him in terms of sports. Now he is also upset about how he was portrayed in a Patriots documentary.

The Apple TV documentary series about the New England Patriots, which aired in 2024, apparently left a bad impression on Bill Belichick.

In the latest episode of the podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out,” Torre explained that Belichick felt “deceived and betrayed” – particularly because of his “underhanded portrayal” in the series about the Patriots’ 20-year success story in the NFL.

The ten-part Patriots documentary series premiered on February 16, 2024—just under a month after Belichick and the Patriots announced their split on January 11 after 24 seasons together.

The interviews for the series had already been recorded before the split was decided.
Nevertheless, the release date added to the suspense, especially given the way Belichick was portrayed in the documentary.

Tom Brady, “an abused dog who kept coming back”

In an article published by The Athletic after the release, it was noted that several former Patriots players described the harshness under Belichick. Matthew Slater, a longtime special teams player, described his time under Belichick as “brutal.” Wide receiver Wes Welker even compared Tom Brady to “an abused dog” who kept coming back to Belichick. Even before the release, WEEI had reported that Belichick “hated” the series. On the Pat McAfee Show in January, Belichick compared the format to a roast in which he himself was the target of the jokes.

The series focuses primarily on the fractured relationship between Belichick and Tom Brady, which ultimately led to the star quarterback moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019 season.
