The Miami Dolphins apparently have long-term plans with their playmaker despite quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s recent injury woes. The franchise will likely pull the option on a fifth year of the contract.
The Miami Dolphins will apparently pull the fifth-year option in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s contract. This is reported by Mike Garafolo of the “NFL Network”. According to the report, the Dolphins have already informed the 25-year-old of the decision.
This would mean that Tua would already be under contract for the 2024 season and would receive a guaranteed 23.2 million US dollars in that season.
Last season, there were major concerns about the health of the quarterback, who suffered several concussions. There was even speculation about an early end to his career. Activating the contract option for a fifth year would be a clear sign of confidence on the part of the Dolphins to continue to rely on Tua in the long term.
Miami Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa inherited Ryan Fitzpatrick
Tagovailoa, who played for Alabama Crimson Tide in college, was picked fifth overall in the 2020 draft. Initially, the Hawaiian started his first season as a backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, eventually taking over as the starter in week eight. Overall, Tua has 8015 passing yards, 52 touchdowns and 23 interceptions so far.
NFL teams have until May 2 to pull the fifth-year option on their 2020 first-round picks.
