NFL: Kansas City Chiefs win with a flawed Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs plunge the Cincinnati Bengals into a sporting crisis, but were by no means flawless themselves. The Pittsburgh Steelers got the season off to a good start with their second win. And the Arizona Cardinals have outclassed the Los Angeles Rams.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Kansas City Chiefs 25:26

In the duel between the two star quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes, the latter had the better end for himself. The decision was only made in the last second in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs when Harrison Butker converted a 51-yard field goal.

The two prominent passers made unusual mistakes. Mahomes completed 18 of his 25 passes, but only gained 151 yards as a result. His two touchdown passes were offset by two interceptions. Particularly worth seeing was how Bengals cornerback CamTaylor-Britt caught an interception with one hand.

Burrow’s game was also characterized by fluctuations. 23 of his 36 passes were on target, resulting in a gain of 258 yards and two touchdowns. However, he also made a fumble at the start of the fourth quarter, which was carried directly into the end zone by opponent Chamarri Conner. This gave the Chiefs a 23-22 lead.

The Bengals also took the lead again with a field goal by Evan McPherson with just under ten minutes to go. But when Mahomes regained possession with 2:35 minutes to go, he put his team within field goal distance, giving them their second win in the second game.

The Bengals, on the other hand, have gotten off to a bad start with two losses and are under pressure in Week 3 in the Monday Night Game against the Washington Commanders.

Los Angeles Rams @ Arizona Cardinals 10:41

The Arizona Cardinals have won their first game of the season and outclassed the still winless Los Angeles Rams. The Cardinals made it 21-0 at the start of the second quarter with their third touchdown of the game. The lead was extended to 34:3 midway through the third quarter, allowing Arizona to maintain the lead for the rest of the game.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray delivered a gala performance, completing 17 of his 21 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns without committing a turnover. Murray thus achieved a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Not only the passing game, but also Arizona’s running game worked and resulted in a gain of 233 yards. James Conner alone accounted for 122 yards and a touchdown. Dennis Gardeck excelled in defense with three sacks.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 19 of his 27 passes for 216 yards, but failed to throw a touchdown pass. Kyren Williams ran for the only touchdown for Los Angeles. Otherwise, however, the Rams’ running game was not a factor with 53 yards.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos 13-6

The Pittsburgh Steelers also won their second game, but had to tremble until the last second. Only when Broncos quarterback Box Nix threw an interception on the last play of the game was the Steelers’ victory perfect.

Justin Fields, Pittsburgh’s quarterback, completed 13 of his 20 passes for 117 yards. His touchdown pass to Darnell Washington was the only touchdown of the game. Broncos quarterback Nix, the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was certainly effective with 246 passing yards, but he also threw two interceptions.

The Broncos generally stood in their own way in many phases of this game. They conceded a total of nine penalties for 124 yards. Denver is now winless after two games this season. The pressure on head coach Sean Payton, who is in his second season with the Broncos, is likely to increase as a result.
