The Kansas City Chiefs are in the AFC Championship Game after a dramatic overtime win against the Buffalo Bills. Although the Chiefs benefited from the rule that a touchdown ends the game, Head Coach Andy Reid is still in favor of changing it.

The victory was made possible by the NFL’s overtime rules. The team that scores a touchdown first wins the game. So the team that wins the coin toss and starts on offense has the advantage of being able to end the game without the opponent being able to respond.

Andy Reid wants rule changed despite win

Although the Chiefs had the advantage in overtime, Andy Reid would have liked the Buffalo Bills to still be able to answer. “To make it fair, both the offense and the defense should play once,” the longtime Chiefs head coach said on “NBC”.

“It was great for us, but is it great for our game?” he asked. “I’m very sure that’s going to be looked at in the offseason.” Each offseason, teams can make proposals for rule changes that must be signed off on by team owners.

Back in 2019, the Chiefs themselves made an official request to change the overtime rule. The reason for this was the loss to the New England Patriots in the 2018 AFC Championship Game.

However, it is highly unlikely that a renewed application to change the rule will be successful. In 2019, the proposal of the two-time Super Bowl champion met with little approval.
