As a lead player, Patrick Mahomes was asked about the scandals surrounding Rashee Rice and Harrison Butker. The quarterback is trying to stay positive
The Kansas City Chiefs have made some headlines this offseason, albeit a significant number of them negative.
Last year’s second-round pick Rashee Rice was charged with multiple felonies as a result of a multi-vehicle accident. The 24-year-old was also under investigation for allegedly assaulting a photographer in a nightclub earlier this month.
While the alleged victim of the assault wants all possible charges against the receiver to be dropped, a potential suspension continues to hang like the sword of Damocles over Rice, whose future in the NFL is open and depends on the outcome of the charges.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is standing up for his pass receiver, even verbally.
“We’re all trying to do everything we can to teach him how to learn from his mistakes,” Mahomes said Wednesday.
“Obviously, that was a big mistake. You have to learn from it and make sure something like that doesn’t happen again and try to do everything you can to be the best person you can be in society, not only for yourself but for the people around you. I believe he is doing that.”
The Chiefs’ second “problem child” is kicker Harrison Butker, who earned a lot of criticism with a controversial speech.
He considers Butker a close friend and a “good person,” Mahomes emphasized: “I’ve known Butker for seven years,” Mahomes said.
“I judge him by the character he shows every day, and he’s a good person. But we’re not always going to agree. He’s said certain things that I don’t agree with. “
