NFL – Kansas City Chiefs: How Eric Bieniemy Plans to Get Patrick Mahomes and Co. Back on Track

The Kansas City Chiefs missed the playoffs last season. To ensure the new season is more successful, Eric Bieniemy has come up with a plan.

Sometimes even small changes are enough to make a big impact.

Essentially, that’s exactly what Eric Bieniemy is banking on. After all, following his return to the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator, he doesn’t intend to change that much. Or shake things up drastically.

Yet the goal is as ambitious as ever, because the Chiefs want to make it to the Super Bowl. Since they didn’t even reach the playoffs last season, that practically screams for drastic changes.

But Bieniemy wants to go back to the basics.

Kansas City Chiefs: Back to the Basics

“I know this sounds a lot like high school,” Bieniemy said, “but we have to start getting the fundamental things right again.”

It’s about the simple things that should actually be a given. Like the quarterbacks’ footwork, the linemen’s proper body positioning, or wide receivers running their routes with a clear plan.

Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Bieniemy sends the offense off the field

Bieniemy means what he says. According to a report by “The Athletic,” the entire starting offense had not lined up correctly during practice. The result? Bieniemy sent them off the field.

“If we don’t get these things right, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing,” said the offensive coordinator. “That’s why we have to address these issues and get back to the fundamentals that this game is built on.”

Because the Chiefs have shown what happens when you don’t do exactly that. When, perhaps due to the successes of recent years, you let your guard down a few percent and neglect the little things.

“We can’t get used to feeling comfortable in our comfort zone and neglecting the fundamentals we need to work on every single day,” Bieniemy explained.
