NFL: Indianapolis Colts provide update on Daniel Jones

The Indianapolis Colts have provided an update on the negotiation situation with Daniel Jones. One of his favorite targets is also set to be extended.

The Indianapolis Colts are confident they will keep quarterback Daniel Jones before the start of free agency. General Manager Chris Ballard gave a positive update on negotiations with the 28-year-old at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Franchise tag for Daniel Jones? “Not what we want”

The negotiation period begins on March 9, with free agency starting on March 11. If no agreement is reached, Indianapolis could use the franchise tag (around $47.3 million for a QB). However, Ballard emphasized: “That’s not what we want. It’s a tool we have.”

Jones played 13 games in his first season with the Colts, racking up 3,101 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He helped the team win eight of their first ten games before suffering a torn Achilles tendon and missing the last four games. He had already suffered a cruciate ligament tear with the New York Giants in 2023. Ballard on his long-term recovery: “The way he prepares, the way he’s built – I think Daniel will be absolutely fit in the long term.”

Head Coach Shane Steichen added: “Daniel Jones played winning football for us until his injury happened. He’s really attacking his rehab – I’m confident he’ll be ready for training camp.”

Indianapolis Colts: Alec Pierce also set to extend contract

Talks with wide receiver Alec Pierce are also progressing positively. Pierce set career highs in 2025: 47 catches for 1,003 yards (best yards per catch in the NFL with 21.3).

Steichen: “It would be huge for us to get these two guys back. That continuity would be extremely important for the offense.”
