NFL: Denver Broncos likely willing to trade star cornerback Patrick Surtain II for top pick

The Denver Broncos would probably give up their star cornerback in return for a top pick in the draft

After the miserable end of the Russell Wilson era, the Denver Broncos are looking for a new starting quarterback. It is highly likely that a new hopeful will be drafted in the upcoming draft.

Denver has a total of eight picks, with the right to select at position 12 in the first round. However, this pick is unlikely to be high enough to secure one of the top players.

A trade up is therefore obvious. Transfer rumors surrounding wide receiver Courtland Sutton have been swirling over the past season. According to a report in the “Washington Post”, however, the franchise is now also willing to trade away star cornerback Patrick Surtain in order to obtain a top pick.

Surtain was almost traded before the trade deadline for the 2023 season, according to an anonymous general manager. However, the Broncos are said to have changed their mind “once they won a few games” and therefore decided to keep the star defender after all.

Head coach Sean Payton “probably regrets that”, the GM is quoted as saying: “This player is someone they could get a lot for”. The 24-year-old was drafted with the 9th pick in the 2021 draft and can also be tied up for the 2025 season through the fifth-year option.

“ESPN” had previously reported that the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers had already tried to sign the former first-round pick last fall.
