In the US professional football league NFL the stars continue to go off the rack because of the corona danger. Super Bowl champion Damien Williams of the Kansas City Chiefs is also exercising his right to sit out the season starting September 10th. This was announced by his team in a short statement without giving specific reasons.

The 28-year-old running back played a key role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl triumph, who now have to replace the second major player. Before Williams, Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif had checked out. The Canadian wants to continue working as a doctor in his “side job” during the corona crisis.

The professionals can make use of the “opt-out” option in view of the pandemic. This is a clause agreed between the NFL and the players’ union NFLPA on the basis of which a contract can be suspended. The players waive a large part of their salary and only receive a salary of $150,000 (128,700 euros).

The bloodletting is particularly great among the New England Patriots, who have to do without half a dozen players. Among other things, defensive star Dont’a Hightower will have to sit out.
