NFL bosses agree: 18th regular-season game inevitable in the long run

The 2021 season will be the first in the NFL with 17 regular-season games. The addition of one game per team was preceded by long decision-making processes and negotiations. But NFL bosses already have another season extension in the back of their minds.

Munich – The NFL is currently in its premiere season with 17 games per team.

The coming years are to be used to gather data on the meaningfulness and TV ratings. Because the league’s officials already have new plans and want to add one more game per franchise to the schedule in the long run.

Additional game for each team

An expansion of the season cannot occur without the approval of the NFL Players Association. After the recent introduction of the 17th regular season game, this means that an additional game will probably not be a priority for the next few years.

But the groundwork has already been laid. “If you want to know when you can expect it, look at the TV deals,” “CBS” quoted a source in ownership circles.

In fact, in the long run, the league has already created several windows for each team to play another game. “You won’t hear about it for the next three to five years. The Players Association is still against it and there’s no need to rush. But after that, for sure,” it continues.

No one would have expected the introduction of a Wild Card Game on Monday some time ago either. Accordingly, it should hardly be more absurd that we will see even more games in the regular season in the future.
