NFL: Baker Mayfield ready to stay with the Cleveland Browns

After no trade of Baker Mayfield came about so far, the quarterback can now imagine staying with the Cleveland Browns. This might also be related to the legal situation surrounding Deshaun Watson

Munich/Cleveland – Actually it seemed to be already decided that Baker Mayfield will leave the Cleveland Browns after the signing of Deshaun Watson. The trade, however, has so far failed to materialise. Now the quarterback is hinting at being willing to reconcile with his employer. However, the team would have to make the first step.

“I think in order for that to happen, there would have to be some coming forward,” Mayfield told reporters during a youth football camp in Norman, Oklahoma. “But we’re ready to move on, I think – on both sides. “

Deshaun Watson faces suspension of at least one year

The attempt at reconciliation could also be linked to the legal situation surrounding Deshaun Watson. The latter’s hearing before the jointly appointed disciplinary commissioner of the NFL and the NFL Players Association, Sue L. Robinson, began on Tuesday. According to Dan Graziano of “ESPN”, the NFL is expected to push for a suspension of at least one year.

In that case, Mayfield, who has been the No. 1 pick in 2018 and has been committed to the Browns for one more year via the fifth-year option for the 2022 season, could serve as a stopgap. The alternative would otherwise be newly signed Jacoby Brissett.

Mayfield has been linked in the media to other teams such as the Carolina Panthers. The passer admitted he was “frustrated” that a trade didn’t happen before mini-camp. But he said he had no negative feelings about the Browns or the environment.

“I’m thankful for my four years in Cleveland,” he said. “There were a lot of ups and downs. I’ll keep the learning experiences with me forever…. The people in Cleveland, it’s a great sports town. I’m grateful for that and there’s no resentment at all towards the city of Cleveland.”
