NFL: Aaron Rodgers’ time with the New York Jets is officially over

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ time with the New York Jets is over. The franchise has officially announced the decision.

The New York Jets are parting ways with Aaron Rodgers.

“Last week, we met with Aaron and informed him that we wanted to go in a different direction at the quarterback position,” new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey emphasized in a statement released by the team.

“It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and give each of us the necessary time to plan for our respective futures. We would like to thank him for the leadership, passion and commitment he has brought to the organization and wish him much success in the future,” the statement continued.

Rodgers, who turned 41 in December, returned last season after tearing his Achilles tendon and played 17 games. His 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns were tied for the third-best seasons in franchise history.

However, the Jets missed the playoffs by going 5-12.

Jets owner Johnson thanks Aaron Rodgers

“I want to personally thank Aaron for his time with the New York Jets,” said owner Woody Johnson.

“His arrival in 2023 was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, and I will forever be grateful that he chose us to continue his Hall of Fame career.”

And further: “From day one, he has embodied everything it means to be a New York Jet, embracing our fans and immersing himself in our city. That’s what I’ll remember most when I look back on his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him nothing but the best, whatever he does next,” Johnson continued.

Rodgers’ departure will cost the Jets dearly.

Rodgers has one year left on his contract in New York, for which he receives $37.5 million without guarantees. According to ESPN, the deal has a cap hit of $23.5 million.

The Jets would thus face $49 million in dead money if they part ways, which can be spread over two years if he is released after June 1. In that case, only $14 million would be charged in 2025 – a savings of $9.5 million. However, there would then be $35 million in dead cap in 2026.

Rodgers-Aus: Jets continue overhaul

With the release of Rodgers, the Jets continue their complete turnaround and will enter the upcoming season with a new quarterback, new head coach, new general manager, new offensive coordinator in Tanner Engstrand and a largely new coaching staff.

Three other quarterbacks are currently on the roster: veteran Tyrod Taylor, 2024 fifth-round pick Jordan Travis, and Adrian Martinez, who signed a future contract in January.

It is questionable whether Rodgers will continue his career in the NFL with another franchise after his departure from “Gang Green.”
