Denver Broncos: NFL officially approves record sale

Green light from the NFL: Team owners have officially approved the sale of the Denver Broncos to the Walter-Penner Group. The US$4.65 billion deal breaks all previous records.

Munich – The sale of the Denver Broncos is official. The 32 team owners gave the green light for the mega deal at a meeting in Minneapolis, the team from Denver will be sold to the Walton-Penner Group.

The group is led by US entrepreneur and multi-billionaire Rob Walton. The 77-year-old is heir to the fortune of Walmart, the world’s largest grocery chain. According to consistent reports, the Broncos are changing hands for 4.65 billion US dollars. Walton is the richest of the 32 NFL owners, with an estimated fortune of just under $60 billion.

Broncos sale historic

This sale will go down in the history of US sports. No franchise has ever been bought for more money. The most expensive sale of a US sports team to date was Steve Cohen’s acquisition of the New York Mets. He acquired the baseball team in 2020 for 2.475 billion US dollars.

The takeover is synonymous with the end of a long era at the Denver Broncos. Pat Bowlen had acquired the franchise in 1984 and owned the team from the Mile High City until his death in 2019. In June this year, the Pat Bowlen Trust and the Walter-Penner Group reached an agreement on the intended deal. In the process, the Walter-Penner Group was one of four bidders in a second round of bidding.

With three Super Bowl victories (1997,1998 and 2015), the Broncos are among the most successful NFL teams of the past 25 years.
