New England Patriots: Matthew Judon contract dispute threatens to escalate

After Matthew Judon had a heated discussion with head coach Jerod Mayo on Monday, he was absent from practice on Tuesday.

Star linebacker Matthew Judon of the New England Patriots had already expressed his displeasure with his contract situation last week – on Monday, the defensive lineman left the practice field after a discussion with head coach Jerod Mayo and the team managers. He didn’t even show up on Tuesday.

Last week, it still sounded as if Judon wanted to go through with his contract: “Honestly, I signed a contract. My signature is on it. I have to play with it. Do I want to? No. Do I think that’s my value? No. But again, that’s not up to me.”

Now the situation surrounding the linebacker threatens to escalate.

Judon is entering the final year of his four-year contract this season and recently admitted that it was “hard not to be jealous when I see his teammates’ contracts”. The Patriots star turns 32 in August and is earning a base salary of 6.5 million US dollars this season.

Onwenu is also hoping for a new contract

But not only the striking Judon is hoping for an agreement soon, teammate and offensive lineman Michael Onwenu would also be happy if the pass rusher would sign a new contract: “It means a lot to me, but we can’t really do anything about it”.

Judon’s current average salary ranks 14th in the league among outside linebackers. He has been one of the Patriots’ few constants in recent years.
