Trent Brown has signed an extremely performance-based contract with the New England Patriots. In addition to fat bonuses for playing time, the tackle also receives money for a certain weight.
As reported by “ESPN”, the tackle will get up to an additional $750,000 per season should his weight stay within a predetermined range.
First bonus to start offseason program
In detail, that means he will receive $150,000 if he weighs 385 pounds (about 175 kilograms) or less on the first day of the offseason programme. It’s $75,000 if he weighs 375 pounds (about 170 kilograms) or less on June 1.
On July 16, another $75,000 will be due if Brown is at 365 pounds (about 165.5 kilograms) or less. If he maintains that weight on each Thursday during the new season, there will be an additional $25,000 each time. The agreement is for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The deal is a prime example of how to keep a good player on the roster without putting a huge strain on cap space. That’s because the Patriots also lured Brown with playing time bonuses, tiered by percentage of offensive snaps. So there’s $500,000 for participating in 65 percent of the offensive snaps. There’s also that if he participates in 70 percent of the snaps.
Up to 4.5 million for playing time
Another $750,000 each for 75, 80, 85 and 90 per cent. He earns another $500,000 if he participates in 95 percent of the snaps or makes it to the Pro Bowl. The bottom line is that a maximum of 4.5 million dollars is possible.
The 29-year-old has played in the NFL since 2015 and back with the Pats since 2021. He was already under contract in Foxborough in 2018, when he won the Super Bowl with the team. After that he went to the Las Vegas Raiders for two years.
He most recently signed a new two-year contract that, in addition to bonuses, gives him a signing bonus of $2.5 million and a guaranteed salary of $1.5 million in 2022, among other things.
