Bill Belichick held another one of his legendary grumpy press conferences. This time it was about quarterback Mac Jones’ ankle. However, as the journalists discovered, the 70-year-old was only discreetly in the mood for follow-up questions.
Munich/Foxborough – As head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick is known not only for his successful time with Tom Brady, but also for his grumpy manner.
The 70-year-old now took it out on a journalist during one of his legendary press conferences. The bone of contention was probably questions about the health of quarterback Mac Jones.
The nominal starter had recently suffered a “pretty severe sprain” of his upper ankle in the Patriots’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
At the Patriots’ press conference before the game against the Green Bay Packers, Belichick was asked whether Jones would be able to play against fellow quarterback and Packers superstar Aaron Rodgers.
The head coach’s answer was in the usual Belichick manner – slightly annoyed and (unintentionally) curt for the reporters asking the question.
New England Patriots – Bill Belichik annoyed: “Deployment will depend on the day!”
When asked if Jones would be ready to play Sunday, Belichick replied towards reporters several times, annoyed, “I’ll repeat it one more time: it’s going to be a day-by-day decision. We’ll see day by day how it is and not rush anything. Simply day by day”.
Yet everything had started quite normally: At first, Belichick had said that his quarterback’s ankle was looking better every day and that a call-up was within the realm of possibility. Only the repeated demand was probably too much for “Grumpy Bill”.
Afterwards, the press conference turned into a classic Belichick-PK.
Bill Belichik: “I’m not a doctor, that’s not my job “
“Do I look like a doctor, or a surgeon? I don’t know,” the 70-year-old grumbled towards journalists about Jones’ healing process. “You think I’m going to read his MRI results and make a plan for when he’s coming back? That’s not my job.”
At the end of the day, the Patriots would re-evaluate the health of their starting quarterback day by day, as they have said many times before, and then decide whether or not he would play against the Packers.
But with his inimitable manner, Bill Belichick has once again done honour to his role as an NFL legend.
