Mitchell Trubisky before NFL restart: Suddenly courted

Mitch Trubisky decided to reset with the Buffalo Bills after four years in Chicago. Now the feisty quarterback could relaunch as a starter.

Munich – Things can happen fast in the NFL. Very fast.

Just a few days before the official start of free agency, events are overflowing with monster contracts and mega-trades. It’s happening so fast that no one even notices that Mitch Trubisky is also getting in on the action amidst the offseason chaos.

No joke: The No. 2 pick of the 2017 draft has a very strong hand in the poker game for an attractive job. This has now even gone so far that the 27-year-old openly flirted with a few teams in an interview.

With the New York Giants, for example, who are now coached by his ex-coach Brian Daboll. Or with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Theoretically, Trubisky is a topic wherever an experienced quarterback is needed. Yet he was actually already written off.

Mitchell Trubisky: Special relationship with Coach Daboll

“I think of Coach Daboll right away because I connected with him right away in Buffalo,” Trubisky said on ESPN. “I’m excited to see what he does in New York. I don’t know where I’m going to go, but I know he’s going to do a great job with this offense.”

With the Giants’ problematic cap space, I wonder if Daboll will bring in Trubisky to let him compete with Daniel Jones for the starter’s spot. Difficult.

But why Trubisky of all people?

As “ESPN” reports, he could make tens of millions of dollars or more with a new team. This development is quite astonishing, considering how difficult his time with the Chicago Bears was. The designated franchise quarterback could never quite fulfil the expectations, it was a constant up and down, especially at the end everything just seemed like a big misunderstanding.

Trubisky “fled” to the Buffalo Bills for the 2021 season, where he became Josh Allen’s backup. And pressed the reset button there. Apparently, so did his market value.

Trubisky: Praise from the Buffalo Bills

“Josh is unbelievable,” Trubisky said. “I’ve had so much fun with Josh and Davis Webb and our whole quarterback room. I’ve learned from Ken Dorsey, Brian Daboll’s offense and also Shea Tierney. I just learned so much from Coach Daboll.”

He had nothing but positive things to say about Trubisky, Bills general manager Brandon Beane returned the praise, “Despite his ups and downs in Chicago, he never said a negative word about anything. I have nothing but positive things to say about him and I’m sure he’ll get a good chance this year to at least compete for a spot as a starter.”

In his career, Trubisky is 29-21 as a starter, throwing for 10,652 yards, 64 touchdowns, 38 interceptions and comes in with a passer rating of 87.0, twice reaching the playoffs with the Bears. Still, the conclusion gladly stuck from the four years that the Bears often won despite Trubisky, and not thanks to the quarterback.

Weak quarterback class in the 2022 NFL Draft

The fact that he’s now a hot option on the market is partly because he used his time with the Bills to take a step forward, word gets around. He’s not going to be an overachiever anymore, and for some teams a reliable playmaker is enough in light of a weak top quarterback class in the draft. Who could also be placed alongside a young up-and-comer as a transitional quarterback and a mentor of sorts.

Of course, the fact that there just aren’t many good quarterbacks on the open market right now also plays a role.

And yes, the idiosyncrasies of the business are also a reason for the surprising change. Because in the NFL things can happen quickly. Even for players who have actually already been written off.
