Tyreek Hill is having an MVP-worthy NFL season. The Miami Dolphins receiver is chasing the season record for receiving yards and the magical 2000-yard mark. How likely is that?
Tyreek Hill has suffered a setback in his pursuit of the record. The Miami Dolphins’ star receiver was forced to sit out the 30-0 win over the New York Jets in Week 15 due to injury.
Nevertheless, both Calvin Johnson’s season record for receiving yards (1964) and the 2000-yard sound barrier are still within reach.
For Johnson’s record, Hill would have to average 142 yards in each of the remaining three games and 153 yards per game for the 2000-yard mark.
The Miami Dolphins’ next three opponents are the Dallas Cowboys, the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills. Since all three teams are among the top 10 defenses in the NFL in terms of passing yards allowed, this should be an ambitious task.
The Cowboys defense allows an average of only 176.9 passing yards per game. The Ravens (185.7) and Bills (200.6) are only marginally worse.
Hill has only played against the Cowboys twice in his career, averaging 141 yards per game. Against the Bills, the star receiver has twice totaled more than 150 receiving yards – both times in the playoffs.
In six regular-season games against Buffalo, however, the “Cheetah” averaged just 47.2 yards per game. Against the Ravens, Hill is averaging 105 yards per game.
NFL: Showdown between Dolphins and Bills
So statistically it is unlikely that Hill will break Johnson’s record – let alone the 2000-yard mark. The 29-year-old’s priority should be winning the AFC East anyway.
The Dolphins are currently at the top of the division with a record of 10-4. However, Buffalo (8-6) is only two wins behind them and the two meet on the final day of the regular season.
