Mike Gesicki and the Miami Dolphins still have not been able to agree on a new contract. It is very likely that the 26-year-old tight end will play under the franchise tag next season
Munich – At the beginning of the offseason Mike Gesicki signed a franchise tag with the Miami Dolphins. This keeps him with the franchise for at least one more year. Nevertheless, Gesicki and the “Fins” could have already agreed on a new contract during the offseason.
This happened with another tight end, for example. David Njoku, too, did not talk to the team about a new contract until later. This now seems unlikely with Gesicki. At least that is what Mike Garafolo of “NFL Media” reports. According to the report, the team and the 26-year-old were not in contract negotiations during “any part of the offseason”.
The deadline for a longer cooperation is 15 July.
It is not expected that there will be a short-term agreement in the case of Miami and Gesicki. Under the tag, Gesicki, who scored two tochdowns and 780 receiving yards last season, will earn around $10.9 million.
Then the tight end would start the new season without a long-term contract. The same goes for fellow position player Dalton Schultz (of the Dallas Cowboys), who at least signed the tag like Gesicki. It’s more complicated for Bengals safety Jessie Bates and offensive lineman Orlando Brown (Kansas City Chiefs), who have yet to sign their franchise tag. A holdout is not being ruled out.
