Los Angeles Chargers: Cap chaos solved (for now) – Mike Williams released

Around the start of free agency, the Los Angeles Chargers had to take a red pen to their own roster. The reason: cap space. Now the team has created a little breathing room – but had to part with a star

A few hours before the official kick-off of the new NFL season, the Los Angeles Chargers have sorted their cap space. According to NFL regulations, teams must stay within the specified salary budget at this time.

Accordingly, they must react by adjusting contracts or releasing players if the cap space has been exceeded.

The Chargers also had to part ways with wide receiver Mike Williams for this reason. The dismissal of the 29-year-old saves 20 million US dollars in salary

Chargers: Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Keenan Allen stay for the time being

In addition, the contracts of offensive lineman Andrew Trainer and defensive back Amechi Uzodinma were terminated to free up another 1.25 million US dollars.

As a result, the Chargers, who had previously overdrawn cap space, are complying with the regulations. Rumors persisted until the end that, in addition to Williams, the future of Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Keenan Allen – three important (but aging and expensive) pillars of the team – was uncertain.

However, Chargers fans can at least plan for Mack with relative certainty. The pass rusher agreed to a contract adjustment that gives the Chargers more cap space for the upcoming season. Whether that means Bosa and Allen also have a future remains to be seen in the fast-paced NFL.
