Jakob Johnson has played with Tom Brady, with Mac Jones and Derek Carr. Jimmy Garoppolo is the new quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders – and impresses Johnson with more than just accurate looks.
Appearances are always a matter of taste. But there should be plenty of agreement with the assertion that Jakob Johnson is currently playing with one of the NFL’s most attractive quarterbacks. But, of course, that’s not what the Las Vegas Raiders are about.
“Jimmy’s a great guy. I mean, you guys see it. The haircut is amazing every day, always a smile on his face. You can’t shake that guy. He’s in a good mood, he comes out there and throws the ball and it’s a lot of fun,” Johnson said with a twinkle in his eye about Jimmy Garoppolo, for whom he will block at fullback in 2023.
But when it gets serious, in the huddle, Garoppolo can do more than just look good, Johnson confirmed, “He takes charge. I’ve played with a lot of different quarterbacks. He’s definitely a guy who gets everyone on the same page and isn’t afraid to tell me to take a few steps back if I’m doing it too eagerly. He’s overall a great guy. “
As for himself, he signed a new one-year contract some time ago and made the cut as expected. An interesting question is whether his role might change. Whether he might also be used as a tight end, get more balls.
Jakob Johnson: Expandable Stats
But he needs to step it up when it comes to receiving skills. In four seasons, he has caught 18 passes for 93 yards, one touchdown and five first downs. Johnson’s numbers last year with the Raiders: He caught five passes for just ten yards. He got 21 reps as a tight end on 302 total offensive snaps.
He’s staying out of it as far as his field, he said: “I’m trying to let my practice performance do the talking, and whatever happens, happens.”
And joked that all you have to do is put quarterback Brian Hoyer on the field. Who, as we know, has German roots. “Ever since he found out he was German, he can’t stop throwing me the ball. So whenever we are on the field, there is some kind of connection.”
Ultimately, he doesn’t care what his role is: “At the end of the day, it’s football, and when you’re on the field, you better be having fun, otherwise you’re doing something wrong. “
