Las Vegas Raiders fire head coach Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler.

Josh McDaniels is no longer head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. The franchise made the announcement Wednesday night. He is the first head coach in the NFL to take his hat this season

The Las Vegas Raiders have pulled the ripcord after a slow start to the season with three wins out of eight games, parting ways with head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler.

Team owner Mark Davis made the announcement late Tuesday night. “After ample consideration of what the Raiders need moving forward, I have decided to go my separate ways with Josh and Dave,” Davis said. McDaniels and Ziegler each had not taken office in Las Vegas until January 2022.

“I want to thank both of them for their hard work for the Raiders and and wish them and their families nothing but the best,” Davis continued. The move worsens McDaniels’ record as head coach to 20-33. He previously tried his hand as head coach in 2009 and 2010, then of the Denver Broncos, but was fired in his second season there as well.

Interim solutions have already been decided

This makes the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator the first head coach to be relieved of his duties. His temporary successor will be Antonio Pierce. The 45-year-old had been the linebackers coach to date.

The position of general manager has also already been filled on an interim basis. Ziegler’s previous assistant Champ Kelly will take over the GM’s duties until a new one is found.

The Raiders host the New York Giants at home in week nine.
