The NFL owners have signed off on some rule changes for the 2023 season. One adjustment doesn’t sit well with Chiefs star Travis Kelce.

On Tuesday, the owners of the 32 NFL teams met and voted on some rule changes for the new season. Among other things, it was waved through that after the fair catch of a kickoff, the team in possession of the ball will start at its own 25-yard line.

This has the effect of making returns less attractive and reducing the risk of injury. However, this adjustment has not only advocates.

Chiefs: Head Coach Andy Reid also criticises kick-off rule

On the “New Heigths” podcast, Travis Kelce criticised the change, agreeing with his head coach Andy Reid, who had earlier struck similar notes.

“I think it’s totally stupid. I don’t think it makes the game safer. I think it makes it more boring and takes a lot of the excitement out of the opening of the game. It’s ridiculous,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was clear.

His brother Jason, a centre for the Philadelphia Eagles, is also less than enthusiastic about the rule. “We’re getting closer and closer to eliminating special teams. All that’s left now is the punt,” said the 35-year-old, who believes there will be virtually no returns in the future: “When is someone not going to make a fair catch and not take the ball at the 25? Only when it’s a really bad kick, right? “

It’s possible, however, that the kickoff rule will be a thing of the past by the 2024 season. The NFL has only scheduled the adjustment as a test for now and wants to wait for the results first.
