Kansas City Chiefs: Steve Spagnuolo can still imagine himself as head coach

Despite another strong season for the Kansas City Chiefs, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is once again not getting a job as head coach. The 64-year-old could still imagine it

Since 2019, Steve Spagnuolo has been defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. “Spag” won three Super Bowl rings with Head Coach Andy Reid. He previously won another one with the New York Giants. This makes him the only defensive coordinator to achieve this to date.

Spagnuolo’s strong defense paved the way for the Chiefs’ victory in the last Super Bowl. The defense finished the regular season as the second-best in the entire NFL.

But when it came to filling the vacant head coach positions in the NFL, Spagnuolo once again came away empty-handed despite all his successes. Sapagnuolo did not approach any team for a job interview. However, Spagnulo does not want to give up his hopes of being hired as head coach.

“We are proud men in this business. We want to win and we want to show that we are capable of something. That goes for me as much as it does for the players. Would I like to do it? Yes. But even if it never happens, that’s fine with me,” “CBS” quotes the 64-year-old.

Spagnuolo would not be averse to a second chance as head coach. Spagnuolo was already the head coach of the then St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2012.

Spagnuolo puts his fate in God’s hands

“I’m putting these things in God’s hands. If it’s his will to lead, mentor and teach another team and young men – which is what coaching is all about – then I’ll fully commit to it. If not, then I’m so blessed to have this job and to be able to work with the people I work with,” the coordinator continued.

Could he perhaps even imagine a successor to KC head coach Andy Reid? For the time being, Spagnuolo doesn’t want to know: “I’m probably joking. It doesn’t give me sleepless nights, but the answer to the question would be ‘yes’, but if it never happens, it’s fine with me. “
