Patrick Mahomes is the Kansas City Chiefs’ main man and wants to be well protected. His O-Line usually takes care of that. However, Andy Reid now made a significant change known for the upcoming season
The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line is a centerpiece in Head Coach Andy Reid’s offense.
As recently as March, Jawaan Taylor was signed to a four-year, $80 million contract to take over the left tackle position. Two months later, that plan has fallen through, as Reid has now revealed.
Instead, first-round pick Donovan Smith, signed last week, is now expected to play left tackle, with Taylor moving to right tackle in his place. “He was a left tackle at a high level, and if you look at last year, he was hurt,” Reid said of Smith, “the year before he was one of the best left tackles in the league. “
Kansas City Chiefs: Going into practices with plenty of options
Regarding Taylor, Reid confirmed, “Yes, we will move him to the right side.” According to the head coach, however, these plans only apply to the first practices of the offseason for the time being. He said they want to keep the option open to swap both players again as well.
Taylor played in 22 snaps as a left tackle in four years, according to “PFF,” though most of those came in 2022. Smith, on the other hand, started in 124 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a left tackle and has not played a single snap at right guard in that time.
Preceding the consideration of Taylor as the new left tackle in the first place were failed negotiations with Orlando Brown Jr. who now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals. The plans with Taylor, however, now seem to be thrown overboard even before the first workouts.
