Former Houston Texans team president Jamey Rootes has passed away at the age of 56. The long-time sports official’s widow made the announcement on social media.

Munich – The Houston Texans are mourning the loss of their former and first team president Jamey Rootes.

As wife Melissa Wildgen Rootes announced via social media, Jamey Rootes passed away last Sunday at the age of 56. According to the statement, the former Texans president had lost the battle against his mental problems. However, the exact cause of death remained unknown.

Rootes resigned from office in 2021

Rootes was hired by owner Bob McNair as team president with the Texans in 2002 – with the formation of the franchise – and subsequently oversaw the NFL team’s fortunes and business operations for about 20 years. He stepped down in 2021.

“Jamey distinguished himself above all else by his dedication and deep commitment. He loved the city of Houston and touched many lives through his work,” Melissa wrote in thoughts of her late husband.
