“Consider all possibilities” – Bill Belichick leaves quarterback question open for now

Three players are currently fighting for the starting quarterback position with the New England Patriots. Head Coach Bill Belichick knows that this decision needs to be well considered.

With regard to the quarterback position, nothing seems to be decided at the New England Patriots’ training camp, at least if Bill Belichick has his way. Just a few weeks before the start of the season, the legendary head coach is, as usual, keeping a low profile in his statements, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

Rotation not unlikely
Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer – one of these three quarterbacks will take on the legacy of Tom Brady against the Miami Dolphins on September 13. Former MVP Newton is considered a favourite by many, but another solution would not be out of the question.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, for example, also believes that a rotation of two quarterbacks is possible next season, as he told Mike Reiss of ESPN on Wednesday.

“I always say that I will do what is best for the team and give us the best chance to win. Whatever that will be, I will consider all possibilities.”

Basics are in the foreground
All three players should have the same chance to become starting quarterbacks, and it seems that this will be done during the first training sessions: Newton, Stidham and Hoyer will share the first few days of training with the best position groups.

“At the moment we want to give everyone the opportunity to train the basics of our system,” Belichick explained. “We are currently pursuing this concept on all positions. Each player should rotate through once completely.

Close Triathlon
The absence of the traditional preseason games does not necessarily make Belichick’s final decision any easier. And although the majority of the experts see Cam Newton as the favourite in the battle of the quarterbacks, the former Carolina Panthers playmaker still has some catching up to do, Belichick said.

“All the quarterbacks have worked very well so far,” the Patriots head coach assured the team last Monday. “I haven’t worked with Cam much so far, but he works really hard. He’s really committed, as are Jarrett and Brian.”

The final decision will likely be made in the coming weeks. Whatever Bill Belichick decides, it should be an exciting season for all the fans of the New England Patriots.
