A US journalist claims the Buffalo Bills have inquired with the Carolina Panthers about star running back Christian McCaffrey. Indeed, such a blockbuster trade would make sense for all parties involved.

Munich/Buffalo – It would be a real blockbuster trade that Dan Fetes brought into the conversation on Monday night.

The US journalist, who works for a local Buffalo-area television station, tweeted Monday night that the Bills had inquired about star running back Christian McCaffrey with the Carolina Panthers. Fetes was referring to a source close to the Bills.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero, however, reports that the Panthers are not currently in concrete talks with the Bills or other teams about McCaffrey. While there are currently no hot trade negotiations, Pelissero believes several interested teams could come knocking on the Panthers’ door in the coming weeks.

The Panthers haven’t had trade talks about Christian McCaffrey with the Bills or any other team this season, per sources. Carolina already paid most of his $8.6M salary in a bonus. Every team will be working the phones the next few weeks, but nothing in the works with CMC.

Although a move to the Bills is not currently acute, it would actually make sense for everyone involved. The Panthers are in a rebuild after the firing of Matt Rhule. The current season is likely to be a transition season at best for Carolina. High draft picks the Panthers could get in exchange for McCaffrey would help with the rebuild.

McCaffrey could give the Bills offense another boost

The Bills, on the other hand, would give their star quarterback Josh Allen one of the NFL’s most dangerous weapons in McCaffrey. McCaffrey not only excels as a ball carrier, but is also playable as a receiver. While the Bills already have a loaded team, the running game falls a bit short. Which is why the offence would be upgraded with the versatile running back. McCaffrey could also take some pressure off Allen.

Furthermore, the Los Angeles Rams led the way last season. The signing of star players like Von Miller or Odell Beckham Junior was rewarded with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Now the Bills could well go all-in to set themselves up for Super Bowl success.

And last but not least, McCaffrey would certainly benefit from a move to Buffalo. The 26-year-old has spent his entire career so far with the Panthers, who drafted him eighth overall in 2017. He has not been afforded a true playoff run with the franchise in those years. Now, he could be headed to one of the NFL’s hottest teams and have a real shot at a championship ring.

So the rumour is not as far-fetched as it sounds at first. The next few days will show what happens.
