Patrick Mahomes Sr. has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. The father of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes is on trial in Texas. According to court documents, Mahomes Sr. was indicted on Thursday for third-degree driving under the influence of alcohol. He faces a maximum sentence of up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to 10,000 US dollars.
The 53-year-old was arrested in Texas just over a week before the Chiefs’ Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. According to an affidavit, Mahomes Sr. was caught with an open can of beer in the center console. He had previously attracted attention with his driving style, traveling significantly slower than the other cars.
He told police he had “had a couple beers while watching a game at a local bar” when asked why he had been drinking while driving, according to the affidavit.
“Based on the totality of the circumstances,” the arresting officer wrote, citing probable cause, “I believed that Mahomes Sr. was noticeably impaired while operating a motor vehicle in a public place.” He was released on $10,000 bail before the Super Bowl.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. not summoned for the first time
This is not the first time Mahomes Sr. has attracted negative attention in this regard.
According to the New York Post, it was his third drunk driving offense. According to police reports, he was also summoned in 2008 and 2019. He pleaded guilty the last time and served 40 days on weekends in county jail, according to court documents.
When asked, his son of the same name did not want to comment on what happened before the Super Bowl. “It’s a family matter and it will be resolved that way,” the quarterback said on Opening Night of Super Bowl Hot Week.
