The Cleveland Browns are mourning the loss of one of their quarterback legends. Frank Ryan, who led the franchise to its last title to date in 1964, has passed away.

The Cleveland Browns are mourning the loss of their former quarterback Frank Ryan. According to his family, Ryan died at the age of 87.

Ryan suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, which according to his family was caused by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Ryan’s will stipulated that his brain be donated to Boston University’s CTE Center for research after his death.

Ryan plays a central role in the history of the Browns. In 1964, he led the team to its last NFL title to date.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Frank Ryan as we honor the life of a Browns icon and a championship-winning quarterback,” the Browns announced.

In the 1964 final, Cleveland defeated the then-clearly favored Baltimore Colts 27-0, with Ryan throwing three touchdown passes. He played a total of seven seasons for Cleveland. Since then, the Browns have not won a title and are one of only four teams never to reach the Super Bowl.

After his time in Cleveland, Ryan also played for the Los Angeles Rams and the Washington Redskins before ending his career after the 1970 season.
