Receiver rookie Marvin Jones Jr has surprisingly announced his retirement from American football. The reasons are causing concern.

Marvin Jones Jr of the Detroit Lions has publicly announced that he is retiring from the team and American football.

The wide receiver stated that he wanted to take care of a family matter.

The Lions have already officially confirmed that they have released Jones. The pass receiver was already missing from the Lions’ 6:38 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last weekend and was deactivated for unspecified personal reasons.

On Instagram, the father of six explained his decision: “I’ll keep it short: I’m retiring from football to take care of family matters.”

He continued, “I just want to say I have a lot of love and respect for the Ford family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and the coaches.”

But family comes before football for Jones. Exactly what it’s about is not known.

“While it wasn’t an easy decision, I can’t be the player I was supposed to be for the team and take care of my family from afar at the same time,” Jones wrote further.

The 33-year-old had only returned to Detroit in the offseason, where he previously suited up for the Lions between 2016 and 2020.

Jones only with five receptions

From 2021 to 2022, Jones was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His first stop in the NFL was the Cincinnati Bengals, who picked him in the fifth round of the 2012 draft.

This season, Jones has played more of a minor role in the Lions offense. Quarterback Jared Goff has been playing balls primarily to Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds and Jameson Williams.

Jones totaled just five receptions and 35 yards in six appearances. No touchdowns and one fumble have been recorded to date.
