Stetson Bennett has been charged with public intoxication. The quarterback has won two college titles with the Georgia Bulldogs.
Trouble for a college champion: Stetson Bennett has been arrested in Dallas for public intoxication. Police were called because the ex-Georgia Bulldogs quarterback was banging on doors in a residential neighbourhood on Sunday morning.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that upon arrival, officers encountered the male, Stetson Bennett, 25, and determined that he was intoxicated,” a police statement released by “ESPN” said. “Bennett was taken into custody, transported to jail and charged with public intoxication.” No further details have been released.
Two college titles with the Bulldogs
Bennett won college titles with the Bulldogs in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, their first since 1980. He was named Offensive MVP in both finals and was also a Heisman finalist in 2022.
In 2022, he threw for 4,127 yards and 27 touchdowns with seven interceptions, plus he ran into the end zone another ten times. Led by Bennett, the Bulldogs had given the TCU Horned Frogs no chance in this year’s final, 65-7.
Interesting detail: Bennett had started his college career as a so-called “walk-on”, i.e. became part of the team without having been offered a scholarship by the school beforehand.
Also interesting: despite his success, Bennett is not one of the top rookies in the upcoming draft. Among many experts and scouts, the 25-year-old is just barely ranked in the top 10 of all quarterback prospects. What the current alcohol episode will do to his draft prospects remains to be seen.
