New offseason, old storyline: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers let it slip in an interview on the “Pat McAfee Show” that he’s not ruling out a departure from Green Bay.
After a mixed season, Aaron Rodgers has summed things up during an interview with the “Pat McAfee Show”. The 39-year-old, who missed the playoffs with the Green Bay Packers this season, threw for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. A clear step backwards compared to the previous two seasons.
Rodgers himself is not impressed: “Do I think I can still play? Yes. Do I think I can still play at a high level? Yes.”
He left open whether he will play for the Packers next season as well. “I think I can win the MVP award again with the right environment. Whether that’s in Green Bay or somewhere else, I don’t know,” Rodgers said.
Aaron Rodgers: trade possible?
The MVP’s contract from the previous two seasons, which he didn’t extend until last offseason, officially runs through 2026. However, the last two years exist to better allocate the cap hit of the contract, significantly more likely Rodgers will be released or sign a new contract after the 2024 season at the latest.
In a trade, the Packers would have to swallow a large sum (over $100 million) of dead cap space. This money could no longer be used for other players. At the same time, Rodgers’ new employer would have to have the financial resources to be able to afford Rodgers’ high-dollar contract.
So a trade is likely to be quite complicated.
