The Jacksonville Jaguars have started the season surprisingly strong with two wins from three games. Quarterback talent Trevor Lawrence is showing what he’s made of a year late. Also, or especially because the Jaguars have everything focused on him.

A whopping 18 games later, the Jags have again managed to celebrate a victory away from TIAA Bank Field or London. The 38-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers was the highest away win for the men from Florida since 2001.

At the time, quarterback Trevor Lawrence was a sweet two years old. “It’s funny,” he commented on the statistics after the game. “But we don’t care about that. What matters is that we won.” The team has learned to win games again.

Lawrence: meeting expectations at second attempt

A phrase that veteran quarterbacks like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers could have said. Lawrence is on a mission in Jacksonville: to bring back the winning gene. The blond knows how to do it, having lost only four games as a starter since his first year in high school – until he came to Jacksonville. He picked up a meagre three wins with the Jaguars in 2021.

But, fans and media were largely in agreement, the playmaker was absolved of any criticism for that season. His head coach at the time, Urban Meyer, was not only a distant memory in sporting terms, he also indulged in one scandal after another off the field. The fact that both the Jaguars’ offensive line and receivers were just below NFL standards did the rest.

However, after three games, the Jaguars have already done everything they can to help the young quarterback talent in the offseason. Lawrence has been dubbed “the greatest college talent since Andrew Luck”. Comparisons have also been made to Peyton Manning. This alone increases the pressure on the young saviour immensely.

Accordingly, head coach Doug Pederson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy are three absolute experts when it comes to playmakers. The fact that general manager Trent Baalke noticeably strengthened the Jaguars’ squad in the draft as well as in free agency is another pillar for Lawrence on which he and the entire franchise can build.

You can see the result in the stats after just three games. 69 percent of his balls arrive, in addition to 772 yards of space gained, six touchdowns and only one interception. Excellent numbers for a second-year quarterback. By comparison, at the same time last year, he also had 669 yards and five touchdowns, but also seven interceptions. A massive leap forward. Not only thanks to his talent, but also the help of his franchise, who put him in this position in the first place.

New confidence in Jacksonville: “We are a good team “

The aforementioned winning mentality emanating from Lawrence, meanwhile, can be felt in the statements coming out of Florida. “You can’t deny we’re a good team,” the 23-year-old said after the win over the Chargers.

Similarly brash tones are set by Head Coach Pederson. “What we’re seeing on the field is just a result of what we worked on during the week,” he said, visibly pleased at Monday’s media roundtable.

He knows how to win, too: there’s a reason he won the Super Bowl as head coach in 2018 with the Philadelphia Eagles – purely by coincidence the Jaguars’ upcoming opponent and probably their toughest test yet.

Right now, the Jaguars sit atop the AFC South with a 2-1 record.

Even if they almost certainly won’t win the big one, Jacksonville has learned how to win again
