Quarterback Joe Burrow has been critical of the overturned abortion law in the US and taken a clear stand. The 25-year-old shared an emotional post via Instagram.
Munich – On 24 June, the “Supreme Court”, the highest US court, overturned the abortion law. In up to 26 conservative states, abortions could now become illegal again, or at least severely restricted. In 13 of these states, corresponding bills are already on the table.
Some top US athletes, including basketball player LeBron James, footballer Megan Rapinoe or tennis player Coco Gauff, have already spoken out about the regressive change in the law.
Joe Burrow, quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, has now also strongly criticised the new law. He shared an emotional post on his Instagram story. It starts like this: “I’m not in favour of killing babies.” Then the Super Bowl contender lists some exemplary scenarios, “I’m for Becky who found out at 20 weeks during her anatomy scan that the baby she was so excited to bring into this world had developed without life support organs. “
“I am pro-life. Her life. Women’s lives. “
Or: “I’m for Susan, who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrible realisation that her attacker had planted his seed inside her when she received a positive pregnancy test result a month later. “
This too is a cautionary tale: “I am for Theresa, who bled to death due to a placental abruption, leaving her parents, spouse and children with the impossible decision of whether to save her or her unborn child.”
He continued, “I’m rooting for little Cathy, who had her innocence taken away by someone she should have trusted, and whose eleven-year-old body is not mature enough to face the consequences of that betrayal.”
The 25-year-old’s shared post concludes, “You can say and argue that I am pro-abortion, but the truth is: I am pro-life. Their life. Women’s lives. “
