The Tennessee Titans are unhappy with their current stadium and are seeking to build a new home instead of renovating it. A costly endeavour, especially for the U.S. citizens.

The NFL franchise continues to push for a new stadium and is resisting a renovation of its current home, Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Speaking to the Tennessean newspaper, for example, CEO Burke Nihill said a new stadium was the best long-term solution.

Nihill had presented an analysis by construction firm AECOM Hunt Construction to government officials at the end of the week, which concluded that Nissan Stadium would need $1.2 billion in renovation costs and another $900 million for upgrades to remain in place until 2039 – the term of the current lease. This adds up to $2.1 billion. A new stadium would most likely cost between 1.9 and 2.2 billion.

Like most other NFL teams, the Titans would saddle taxpayers with the bulk of the cost. Previous reports and public statements suggest that around 700 million in private money would go towards a new stadium, meanwhile 1.5 billion would have to come from US citizens. This would be a new record.

“The mayor said last week that in his opinion doing nothing is not an option,” Nihill said, speaking to reporters. “I think we’ve been looking at this for three or four years. Probably even longer than that. We just understood that given the condition of this building, the rising NFL standards and really all building standards, we’ve got to stop plugging holes and come up with a comprehensive solution. “

And further, “The structural condition of the current stadium and its inflexibility make it hard to imagine the building being 50 or 60 years old, which it would be if we renewed the lease and did the financing necessary for a large-scale renovation.”

If the parties in question cannot come to an agreement, there could even theoretically be a departure from Nashville. It’s a move the Titans are already familiar with, after all, the franchise left Houston in the 1990s to become first the Houston Oilers and then the Tennessee Titans.
