NFL Approves Sale of the Seattle Seahawks for a Record Price

NFL team owners have unanimously approved the sale of the Seattle Seahawks to the Khosla family. Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed this on Wednesday. The new ownership group is led by tech investor Vinod Khosla.

The sale is being handled by the Paul G. Allen Estate, which has managed the Seahawks since the death of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2018. His sister, Jody Allen, has served as the team’s owner since then.

According to “ESPN,” the Khosla family reached an agreement with the estate on July 11 for a purchase price of $9.612 billion. This makes it the most expensive sale of an NFL team to date.

Previously, the sale of the Washington Commanders held the NFL record: In 2023, an investor group led by Josh Harris—which also included Magic Johnson—purchased the franchise from Dan Snyder and his family for $6.05 billion.

The Seahawks had been owned by the Allen family since 1997. Paul Allen had purchased the franchise from Ken Behring for $194 million at the time and played a crucial role in keeping the team in Seattle.

Seattle to Remain Home of the Seahawks Even After Change in Ownership

Even after the change in ownership, the Seahawks are set to remain in Seattle. The franchise holds a lease for Lumen Field through 2032, as well as three options, each for an additional ten years.

The sale comes after a successful season on the field: In February, Seattle defeated the New England Patriots 29–13, securing the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.
