NFL: Commissioner Goodell Aims to Expand International Games to Ten New Countries

The NFL plans to increase the number of its International Games. New countries are also set to be added, and the commissioner is even getting specific.

Over the past few years, the NFL has expanded to include more and more countries where International Games are held.

While games were initially played only in London, they are now also held in Germany, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, and Spain.

Next season, games in Australia and France will be added. But that’s not where it will end. Quite the contrary.

According to “Sportico,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked at a Fanatics Fest whether there was a new country where the league would like to host a regular-season game. The commissioner’s response: “I have about ten.”

Goodell wants to host games in Japan

Goodell got even more specific, naming Japan as one of the possible future host countries.

“We’ve had a game in Tokyo before, but that was a preseason game. That’s why we now want to hold a regular-season game there.”

The NFL would like to increase the number of allowed international games per season to 16. However, this depends on whether the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) agrees to raise the current cap of ten games.

By the way: The NFL has already held several exhibition games in the Japanese capital of Tokyo, starting in 1976 when the Chargers and the Cardinals faced off.
