NFL: Caleb Williams Gives Pope Leo XIV a Signed Chicago Bears Jersey

Pope Leo XIV is delighted to receive a signed jersey from Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has presented Pope Leo XIV with a signed jersey. The jersey was personally presented to the Pope by Brian Burch, the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See.

Williams signed his jersey with the initials “AMDG,” which stands for “Ad majorem Dei gloriam.” Translated into English, this roughly means “For the greater glory of God.” This is a nod to Williams’ high school, Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., which was founded by Jesuits in 1821.

Williams reposted a photo on social media of the Pope and Burch holding the jersey, with the caption: “Shoutout DAAAA POPEEEE.” What’s interesting is that this is a jersey the Bears don’t normally wear. It’s completely white, while the name and number are in orange. It’s quite possible that the Bears will wear it for the first time next season.

NFL: Pope Leo is from Chicago

Pope Leo XIV is the first U.S.-born pope and grew up near Chicago.

He’s also known as a sports fan who has other Bears merchandise in his collection besides Williams’ jersey. Immediately after his election as pope in 2025, he was presented with a personalized jersey by U.S. Vice President JD Vance; he also owns a Chicago Bulls jersey with the number 14 and the inscription “Pope Leo.”
