NFL: San Francisco 49ers’ Trent Williams Hints at Retirement

Trent Williams is entering his 17th NFL season. It could be one of his last. The San Francisco 49ers’ star lineman has hinted that he likely won’t be playing much longer.

Trent Williams, left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, has spoken openly for the first time about a possible retirement. The 37-year-old suggests that his contract, which was extended this spring, will likely be his last.

Williams has just signed a two-year, $50 million contract with the 49ers through 2027.

When asked if he considers the next two seasons to be the last of his career, he replied succinctly: “Yes, probably.”

However, he did not want to announce an official retirement just yet. “Of course, I can’t see into the future,” said Williams. “I’m still a competitor. It’s hard not to compete when you still can. So we’ll see.”

San Francisco 49ers: Williams wants to be there more for his family

There’s more to Williams’ thoughts than just physical exhaustion. The father of a daughter is thinking more and more about how much time he owes her. “It’s a scary thought,” he admitted.

“I’m torn between the idea of continuing until I can’t anymore and quitting while I’m still at a high level, rather than being pushed out of the league.”

Particularly poignant: His daughter was born just a few months before his NFL draft. She is now 17 years old, and Williams is in his 17th season.

“As a father, I feel like, damn, I’ve kind of missed her whole life growing up. She’s going to college in a few years. I want to be there and be available.”
