Minnesota Vikings: Kyler Murray Is the Best Option at Quarterback – Commentary

Kyler Murray has a new home: Minnesota. For the Vikings, he is the most cost-effective contingency plan, one that could disrupt the head coach’s offensive strategy.
The reason was usually clear whenever the Minnesota Vikings lost games last NFL season: poor performance at the quarterback position.

Neither J.J. McCarthy nor his backups were able to deliver consistently strong performances. Admittedly, McCarthy still enjoyed a bit of a learning curve, as it was essentially his rookie season.

However: The Vikings need a backup plan in case McCarthy fails to meet expectations again. With Kyler Murray, they’ve landed the best possible catch.

Because “K1” signed an exorbitantly large contract with the Arizona Cardinals, the so-called veteran’s minimum of just over a million dollars is enough for him in Minneapolis.

This also means: The Vikings face virtually no financial burden from their new playmaker. And: He has already proven that he has the quality to take a game into his own hands. Not consistently, or even often, but he has proven it.

At the very least, he can ensure that McCarthy improves as well. Because many in the organization still believe in the bright future of the 2024 first-round pick.

Competition is good for business—especially among quarterbacks. It should be clear—especially in hindsight—that Max Brosmer didn’t put McCarthy under pressure. Murray is more likely to do so.

This opens up several possibilities for Head Coach Kevin O’Connell. Not only—logically—because of the personnel, but also because of the style of play.

McCarthy lacks mobility for a young quarterback, which actually fits O’Connell’s preferred style of play: lots of passes from the pocket.

Murray offers the exact opposite: He is mobile, can extend plays, and avoid the occasional sack. He adds a new dimension to the Vikings’ offense.
It is almost certain that O’Connell won’t name a new starter every week. But what if it becomes clear during the preseason that Murray’s style of play is a (better) fit for one or two teammates?

In the end, the head coach doesn’t make decisions based on personal preference, but on who gives him the best chance of winning.

It’s not out of the question that Kyler Murray will be the one in the end.
