NFL – Dallas Cowboys: Owner Jerry Jones breaks new ground in free agency

After two unsuccessful years, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to break new ground in free agency.

In the past two years, the Dallas Cowboys have focused primarily on re-signing players and filling gaps with inexpensive veterans during the offseason, rather than spending a lot of money on free agents.

After two seasons without making the playoffs, owner Jerry Jones now wants to change this strategy and be more aggressive in the market.

“I would bet that we will spend more money on free agents than we have in the past,” the team owner said at the NFL Combine, according to ESPN. “I want you to know that I can only move forward if I borrow from my future. Expect me to borrow from my future, okay?” Jones continued.

Cowboys need to create financial leeway

However, the Cowboys first need to create leeway in terms of the salary cap in order to be able to make generous expenditures in the coming weeks.

With Dallas currently exceeding the season’s salary cap of $301.2 million by about $56 million, Jones announced that he would restructure the contracts of star players Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Tyler Smith, Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Osa Odighizuwa.

Revising the contracts could create up to $120 million in cap space.
